Three years later, a schedule conflict with a driving class ended his piano lessons, which he didn't continue again until his junior year of college. However, he never stopped playing the piano and after moving to Washington, DC, to pursue a Literature degree, he eventually started composing original music in his spare time. Still, music remained a private passion. After graduating in 1998 and stumbling into a computer career, he felt unfulfilled and sought an outlet for his creativity. His music finally reached an audience, as Tom composed the scores for no fewer than six student and independent films. His compositions ranged from incidental noise, to techno music, to orchestral arrangements -- all of which he recorded and produced with a very modest home studio. In 2002, in need of a change of scenery, Tom left the urban sprawl of DC for the unique charm of Charlottesville, VA. After a year long hiatus from music, Tom rekindled his interest by teaching himself classical guitar. The renewed energy came just in time for him to meet Patrick Allen and to discover Silent Muse needed a keyboard player. Despite his long musical history, Silent Muse is the first band in which Tom has performed. After hearing Patrick's early compositions for the band, Tom knew Silent Muse would be a perfect opportunity to fulfill an unrealized dream. Direct musical influences on Tom's piano and keyboard style include David Lanz, J. S. Bach, Nick Cave, and countless moody film soundtracks. He also draws much inspiration from European and Asian folk music, avant-garde musical experiments, and every project with which Mike Patton has been involved. |
